High Performance Brushless DC Motors Become Cost-Effective For New Applications

Torrington, CT (July 21, 2004) — Torrington Research, a technology leader and manufacturer of fans, blowers and pumps, has filed patent applications for its innovations in brushless DC (BLDC) motor and power electronics design. The features covered by the patents pending include a sensorless sine wave drive and low cost microprocessor; and a low inductance, slotless design for improved motor performance. Typical BLDC designs rely on sensors in combination with microprocessor controllers; Torrington's unique design eliminates the need to include sensors, reducing part counts and costs, while increasing reliability.

In addition, Torrington's innovative slotless design eliminates cogging - electrical and mechanical noise produced by typical BLDCs. Brushless DC motors traditionally have been too expensive to justify their benefits in the cost-conscious OEM marketplace when compared to conventional brush-type, DC motors.

Numerous applications in markets ranging from computer to automotive and medical to business equipment will now be able to take advantage of high performance brushless DC motors, fans and blowers. According to Torrington Research Vice President of Sales and Marketing Patrick Sandefur, "Our excitement is based on very meaningful achievements in motor design. The result is not a traditional motor – and its lower cost and integration of the fan, blower and customer product is novel. These designs will change how people visualize fans, blowers and motors.

"These innovations are the result of our ongoing efforts to bring high-performance brushless DC fans to a broad cross section of market applications," Sandefur concluded.

Revolutionary Engineering Improves Performance, Reduces Cost

Torrington's continuous engineering innovations have resulted in brushless DC motors that are smaller, more reliable and include variable speed and other controls integrated in the motor's drive board. The resulting industry leading designs dramatically lower part count, using high-reliability and low-cost components and require very low labor content, which prices the high-performance brushless DC fans competitively with brush motor solutions.

Torrington Research's innovative designs integrate the motor parts into their fans and blowers forming a modular subassembly. In the manufacturing process, Torrington eliminates expensive laminations, metal motor shells, complicated bearing systems, shaft attachment methods, ceramic magnets and discrete balancing. Highly accurate, automated balancing occurs simultaneously with Torrington's routine end-of-line testing of its products.
