Torrington Research Launches
Brushless DC Fan Platform
For HVAC Industry

Platform Breaks Through Price Barrier;
Powers Product Innovation

Torrington, CT (January 28, 2004) — Torrington Research, a leading innovator and manufacturer of fans, blowers and pumps for consumer and industrial applications introduces its brushless DC fan platform for the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning) industry. The cost-effective platform supports OEM use of what had been prohibitively expensive DC motor and fan technologies that cut power consumption, noise and also reduce the fan unit's size.

According to Torrington Research Chairman Roger Dickinson, "Our new brushless DC fan product platform integrates the motor, motor control and user control electronics into the fan and housing. The compact integration of motor controls means that a brushless DC solution can replace typical AC motor and fan combinations.

"With the additional benefits of variable speed, reduced noise and package space, as well as increased efficiency, a product designer can improve their designs with lower manufacturing and unit operation costs," Dickinson concluded.

According to Torrington Research Vice President of Marketing and Sales Patrick Sandefur, "We can offer brushless DC solutions at prices competitive with conventional AC fan and motor combinations.

"With our new fan platform, the HVAC industry will achieve significant system performance improvements including efficiency gains averaging 23 percent; reduced power consumption by as much as 50 percent; increased SEER ratings; and size, weight and noise reductions," Sandefur said.

New Fan Platform is More Reliable, With Lower Life-Cycle Costs

Cost effective integration of a brushless DC fan in HVAC applications replaces the typical AC powered fan. In addition to significant performance gains and lower noise levels, the higher efficiency brushless DC fan module enables designers to offset the increased energy needs of smaller heat transfer coils, and using the variable speed feature, dramatically lower fan operating costs. Reduced fan speeds and lower operating temperatures also dramatically increase fan bearing life.

The brushless DC fan module is also capable of multi-tasking. The motor drive electronics can incorporate various unit control functions, such as electronically starting a compressor motor (eliminating start contactors for the fan), as well as provide sensing of temperatures and refrigerant head pressures for fan speed control.
