Commercial Air Conditioners
Torrington worked with a major supplier of commercial air conditioners who needed to reduce fan noise by 3 dB to meet California noise standards for classrooms. Torrington's axial fans and centrifugal blowers met the noise reduction goal while reducing fan power consumption by 43 percent, decreasing its overall size and maintaining a competitive price.

Residential Air Conditioners
Torrington Research worked with a major supplier of residential air conditioners to increase its next generation product's efficiency, while decreasing noise and adding a variable speed capability. Using our axial fans, we worked with the product design team to incorporate a higher efficiency and integrated motor to reduce costs by lowering height of condenser coil by 25 percent, while increasing the unit's efficiency and adding a variable speed fan at reduced power for improved SEERs.

HVAC/Air-Cooled Liquid Chiller
Torrington Research worked with a major HVAC supplier to develop next generation product designs to reduce fan noise, increase fan efficiency, and lower fan power consumption, resulting in a product with a reduced number of coils and significantly decreased costs. Our redesigned air moving solution reduced noise by slowing down fan tip speeds with an efficient variable speed brushless DC (BLDC) motor that also lowered power consumption. Our design integrated the BLDC motor and controls into a reduced profile housing by eliminating an attached brush motor and reducing the size of unit. Finally, our low part count design for manufacturing reduced part and labor costs, enabling our use of BLDC products at brush motor prices.

Bus/RV Rooftop AC
Torrington Research worked with a major supplier of rooftop mounted air conditioner for RVs to reduce over all unit size, weight, noise and power consumption without increasing costs. We achieved significant size and weight reduction by replacing a brush motor and axial fan with a Torrington designed brushless DC (BLDC) motor integrated into the fan hub. The new fan blade design reduced noise and the BLDC motor and controls supported variable speed option resulting in a 23 percent reduction in power use. Additionally, our design replaced an existing Double Wide Dual Inlet Forward Curved (DWDI-FC) evaporator blower with a BLDC single inlet blower, resulting in a 54 percent reduction in power usage and a 41 percent reduction in fan noise.
